Bespeckled
Original Watercolor

I've always been drawn to things that time has changed.
Dusty bottles tucked onto shelves in antique shops. Speckled glass in curioso and oddity shops. Objects that have been handled, forgotten, and left to gather the marks of years gone by.
My fascination with old glass began in Jerome, Arizona. Since then, I've found myself looking for these little treasures wherever I go. There's something about them that makes me stop and look closer.
These four bottles caught my attention on a shelf in an antique shop in Helotes, Texas.
At first, it was the textures that drew me in — the worn edges of the wooden compartment, the scratches and weathering, the tiny speckles scattered across the glass. But the longer I looked, the more intriguing the bottles became.
Time had changed them so much that some were almost impossible to see through. Their surfaces had grown cloudy and opaque, obscuring whatever might lie beyond them.
And yet, when I looked at them, I didn't see emptiness.
I saw color. Deep purples and shadowy blues. Pale, misty glass. A vivid green bottle glowing against the darkness. Each one seemed to contain a little world of its own, something magical just beyond the reach of my eyes.
I began to wonder whether the beauty of these bottles came not from what they revealed, but from what they concealed.
We often think of age as something that takes beauty away. But sometimes, time leaves behind something more interesting than perfection ever could: layers, character, mystery, and the evidence of a life lived.
In Bespeckled, I wanted to capture that feeling — the moment when something worn and overlooked becomes extraordinary simply because we take the time to really see it.
Perhaps that's what keeps drawing me back to these old bottles. They remind me that even when the details are obscured, there is still so much left to imagine.
