Manhole Covers
A manhole cover, or storm drain cover is something we walk over. It perpetually gets dirty underfoot. It is completely functional. Functional things can be beautiful.
This series started in Japan, where each district is known for their unique cover design. This particular design a man and woman in traditional Yukata and kimono, so it made sense to add ornate kimono patterns to decorate the underneath.
When so much care is given to the design, it should be recognized; elevated and marveled upon, like a stained-glass window.
Colorful images behind the silhouette. They speak of a hidden world of beauty. They require a second look.
